DAX MODESTLY HIGHER AHEAD OF WALL ST

Thursday, January 13

Modest gains remain in place in Frankfurt this afternoon as investors welcome the as-expected decision by the ECB to keep interest rates on hold. However, Wall Street is seen opening lower, while the firmer euro and oil price are also keeping a lid on sentiment. The Dax index is up 6.66 at 4,215.48.

But Infineon remains a weak spot after Q4 earnings of 211m euros missed expectations and expected sales of 1.82bn euros were also weaker than anticipated.

Car stocks are also lower on oil and currency concerns, with VW, BMW and DaimlerChrysler under pressure.

However, MAN is firmer after yesterday's successful 24.2 per cent stake placing.

Schering is also higher after reiterating an 18 per cent EBIT margin for 2006.
