TODAY'S OUTLOOK

Thursday, January 13

After yesterday's turbulence caused by the poor US trade data, figures today for US retail sales should also be of some interest after the mixed picture painted last week by individual retailers.

Overall sales are forecast to have risen by 0.7 per cent in December, while sales excluding autos are seen rising by 0.5 per cent.

Also released in the US will be the latest weekly jobless claims data and figures for December import and export prices.

In Europe, today is decision day on interest rates. However, neither the MPC nor the ECB is expected to sanction any change in policy.

Figures for UK output are also published this morning. Total industrial production is seen rising by 0.4 per cent, with manufacturing output expected to be up 0.3 per cent. Both figures fell in October.
