LONDON STOCKS PREVIEW

Thursday, January 13

UK shares ended with steady losses yesterday, but bargain-hunting could well be seen this morning after Wall Street recovered its losses and closed higher last night.

Steady post-results gains in Intel helped turn the US market around after the poor trade figures, leaving the Dow up 61 points and the NASDAQ up 12 points.

Meanwhile, Asian markets have headed lower, with Tokyo closing down 95 points, while Hong Kong was softer at midday.

On the domestic front, more trading updates are expected from the retail sector today, with statements due from GUS, Sainsbury and Carphone Warehouse.

Meanwhile, figures for UK output are also published this morning. Total industrial production is seen rising by 0.4 per cent, with manufacturing output expected to be up 0.3 per cent. Both figures fell by 0.1 per cent in October.
