TOKYO STOCKS CLOSE LOWER

Thursday, January 13

The Nikkei closed at 11,358.22, down 95.17.

Japanese stocks headed lower today as the yen's rise on the back of the weak US trade data fuelled concerns about the prospects for the Japanese export sector.

Major exporters like Canon and Nissan led the way down as the dollar slumped about 1 per cent against the yen to a 5-week low after the US trade deficit unexpectedly rose to a new record high in November.

Expectations that further yen gains will be seen amid pressure from the US and euro-zone also dampened sentiment, undermining other car and technology stocks.

The losses also came despite Wall Street's recovery last night and an 11 per cent surge in Apple following its post-close results.
